FINALLY finished!!! Amazing how ridiculously impressed people get by a simple knit/purl jumper these days!!! Once upon a time...!! I couldn't find matching buttons in my drawer so... well, I like a bit of added quirkiness! This jumper design is very simple... it's knitted in Shepherd ColourPlay 8ply from the Panda Handknits for Kids book. Love the little pockets on the front... first time I've done some of those! Last week her troupe were performing at a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for cancer research at a local fabric store. As part of the fundraiser the public were invited to make aprons and donate them to charity. I decided the night before (as you do!) to get a little creative! I rummaged around in my stash, found some tartan, a spot of black fabric, some buttons, some lace... and after a little research the Glenbrae aprons were born! Oh boy, I really should get sleep occasionally!

Pretty pleased with how they turned out, especially the details on the
male version... authentic Highland cow hide sporran of course!!! The
buttons I found were perfect and the buckle! So... just to make you smile... here's a
picture of my dad and I modelling them! My daughter was giving
instructions... clearly my dad is more willing to go a little crazy than
I am!!!We are authentic 100% Scots so it is a good photo in many ways!

So anyway, I ended up winning first prize in the modern apron section! A decent prize too!

Since I had the aprons for less than 24 hours I got to missing them... they were so much fun to make... so I went and bought them back!!! Dad is pretty chuffed he's getting his back... I think he was a little sad to part with it in the first place!!!

Next plan is to make a pattern to sell... I couldn't find a pattern for anything similar on the internet... stay tuned...

Recently I seem to have been inundated with little and not so little sewing jobs for other people... some pay in $$$$, some in lunches or coffees out, some are just for love... I'd like to be getting more of my own sewing done... and here and there I've managed to sneak in the odd quirky project or two...

Tonight I decided to use up some of my flannalette scraps and make hand warmers... I double lined them and when the heat is warmed up they really do feel rather toasty! A 5" square and a couple of layers each side (I used plain leftovers inside) and press the opening in and topstitch and you're good to go...!!! Only 30 seconds in the microwave for 1/2 a cup of wheat... no need to burn the house down... the warmth won't last!!! My favourite are the Clone Wars ones!!! I'll show you some more projects soon...

... when I've finished putting a zip in a jacket for a friend...
Super excited!!! Don't you love my brand new logo! I'm totally in love with it myself! She is so noble looking... busy but relaxed! A little hectic perhaps, lots on the go... but it all seems pretty balanced to me! Totally in tune with the way I like to work. And I love what she's done with the simple style and clean lines. It amazes me how Natashia can take a vague idea in my head and turn it into something brilliant! So glad that I asked her... http://smeedesigns.com/ is my favourite applique designers... her patterns are just beautifully made... wait until I review her newest one soon... you'll be blown away! Now I can't wait to use this logo and get some designs of my own in print! Next goal...

Mairihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08711799740655250650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6867878018973025479.post-50294091466108691802013-01-23T23:23:00.001+11:002013-01-23T23:23:49.658+11:00Woolly Wednesday

Found in the local op-shop... how could I resist a photo!?Mairihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08711799740655250650noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6867878018973025479.post-3773535073907486462013-01-20T21:12:00.000+11:002013-01-20T21:12:30.482+11:00Welcome to 2013!This year I've decided to embark on a (probably rather necessary!) personal challenge... finish 52 UFOs... and start as few new projects as I can possibly manage! 52 UFOs you ask!?!?!? Is that even possible!? Well... I might have a wee bit of a problem with starting things... and a bit of a bigger problem with finishing things! I'm probably hyperactive or something (undiagnosed naturally!) or maybe just over enthusiastic! I do get most of my projects finished eventually... just it's getting to the point of totally ridiculous... and I can hardly walk around my studio as it is... so to keep myself accountable I'll be posting pictures of all 52... starting today... Apologies I still need to work on perfecting my photos!
4. Chevron scarf (Noro Kureyon). Totally LOVED knitting this scarf! http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/chevron-scarf-10 Might be a teensy bit addicted to the colour changes in Noro! Divine pattern... lightly felted it when finished and couldn't be happier!
5. Purple and red quilt! This is probably my oldest UFO! It's about 15 years in the making! It's from a Patchwork and Quilting magazine from way back when it started (1996 annual)... Judy Hooworth... called Skewed Squares... always loved her use of colour! Still love this quilt... and the crazy quilting on it! Can't tell you how relieved I am to get this finished at last!
7. Welcome home cross-stitch... another oldie... started this sometime pre 2000... was never really happy with the colours... so different from the original photo... not probably a design I'd pick these days... and the variety of colours in the garden beds almost made me insane!
Well, I've decided it's finally time to bite the bullet and post a tutorial! So, I'm starting simple! Feel free to offer constructive feedback for next time! I'm starting with a very simple bag I designed for some young girls that came to my house and wanted to learn to sew! This is a great beginners project but of course anyone can make it! It's a very handy bag and my daughter (10) uses hers all the time! Enjoy...!

Materials:
* 40cm x 115cm drill or similar heavy-weight material ( this is your main colour for outside and inside of your bag) (corduroy, velvet, upholstery fabric etc)
* 50cm x 115cm denim or similar heavy-weight material in contrast colour (this is your outside, pockets and handle colour) or 1metre fabric if you don't want a join in your handles
* thread to match

I'd love to see any you make so please post in my flickr group which you can find at http://www.flickr.com/groups/thecraftycamel/ Hopefully this will be the first of many tutorials... come again!
Just finished this scarf! Could it be a record!? Dead easy free zig zag pattern... cast on 36 then purl 4, knit 4 and gradually move across a stitch at a time each row! Mairihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08711799740655250650noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6867878018973025479.post-79797917484254333822012-09-03T23:17:00.000+10:002012-09-03T23:18:43.750+10:00Pocahontas eat your heart out!

This is just to make you laugh a little! The beauty of sewing is that occasionally you get a commission that just makes you chuckle! A friend's boyfriend decided he'd like to attend a fancy dress party as Pocahontas!!! Being dark and all it was really rather amusing! So, after a little searching on the internet for suitable ideas I found this brilliant tutorial http://blogilates.com/fashion-2/9876043253 A couple of large, cheap t-shirts later... and a bit of snip snip... I got it done! My husband was none too pleased about having to model but alas I was forbidden from taking photos of him!

I had to alter the pattern slightly because he wanted a one shoulder costume (men! wouldn't you know he'd make it harder!!!) I joined the two collars together and sewed them to the diagonal! Phew! That worked!
He never wore the feathers and arm/head bands and I'm sure he was rather cold on the night being winter and all! But he turned out a pretty convincing Pocahontas... you'd never know he's bald under that glossy hair!!! I'm sure I'll never make another costume like it but it was fun to do!!! "Flourish" is the national conference run bi-annually by the Women's Ministries in the Presbyterian Church of Australia committee (WMPCA for short!), of which I am a member! We've been madly preparing for this for the past year and this year's conference was even more exciting than our first... we made it two days packed with workshops, speakers, fabulous food, and heaps of networking opportunities! Some of the highlights for me were getting away and meeting new people, many of whom are doing amazing things in their communities; fabulous singing; some fascinating interviews with women who were prepared to share their lives with us; leading a workshop on hospitality with a bunch of enthusiastic people; sharing a hotel room with a great girl from Tassie who's set up a great online network for Hobart mums'; hearing some inspiring guys talk about encouraging women to live to their God given potential; having some of my favourite people come up to the conference this time and lead workshops; and so much more! Loved every minute of it! Even added a bit of colour of my own!!! I feel like the real me has finally reached the outside!!!

I also had a great catch up with a good friend of mine... and made
Ninjago costumes for her boys while I was there! Fantastic to catch up with someone who is
so real about her life, such a good listener, and a top girl even if
she can't sew! Fabulous dinner Saturday night, great coffee, and a nice drop of dessert wine! It's always good to see her and her family when I make a trip up to Sydney! Also really enjoyed visiting my old church and catching up with so many familiar faces! Can't wait for my next holiday up at Gosford!!
I make no pretence that I don't love it! Sometimes I don't do it for months at a time but it's like my fall-back craft... I always pick it up again in the end! I know it's kind of daggy but I find it relaxing. At the moment I'm trying to finish 3 cross-stitches that I've been working on for ages and ages... so why don't I show you those... and also a few I've finished over the years!
Almost done! Just a bit more back stitching on the chair and it's finished! I often frame my own cross stitches to save money. I buy a suitable read made frame, get the framer to cut a mount to size (much cheaper!), then press my aida and spray glue it to the backing. It's only when cross-stitches are so "out" like this one is that I get them professionally stretched and framed.
It works well in my newly revamped studio which I must show you photos of one of these days!

As you can tell my style is very ecclectic! I like what I like! Generally I'm attracted to colour or quirkiness but sometimes I will surprise with something altogether different!
The lovely Allyson over at http://hookedonyarn81.blogspot.com.au/ who is my favourite crochet girl has awarded me a blog award! I think she is secretly just trying to encourage me to update my blog more often! Actually, who am I kidding!? There's no secret about it! In the spirit of the award (hey, does it actually have a name!?) I am passing it on to FIVE other bloggers with less than 200 followers that I know and enjoy as a way of encouraging them in their bloggy pursuit!

1. http://pursuitofchairs.blogspot.com.au/ Kaesea always astounds my with her ability to turn the most simple things into the most brilliant! She is a thrift genius extrordinaire and I love what she's doing with her upholstery!

2. http://buttontreelane.blogspot.com.au/ I really enjoy reading Michelle's blog. I always feel inspired to make more of my own clothes when I read her blog! And she's a pretty amazing yarn genie too!

3. http://luboost1.blogspot.com.au Erica tries to suggest her life is mundane as a stay at home mum but from one to another its actually far more exciting than she makes out! I love her way with colour especially and the variety of things she manages to get into her life!

4. http://crossedyarns.wordpress.com/ I did a cross-stitch exchange with Pokua a while back and enjoy her style of cross stitching! She's always very upbeat and I cannot believe the amount of cross-stitching she gets done!

5. handmadebyknottygal.blogspot.com.au This is a really fun blog with a mixture of all sorts of mediums! Girl after my own heart! Josie does the most beautiful stitching and designs!

Well, not quite but close! The last few months have been totally crazy and not entirely expected! Since I last posted we have got busy with a project called Pads for Africa which had a goal of creating 100 hygiene kits for women in Malawi! Do you know how long it takes two people to sew 1,500 washable pads?!?! Crazy stuff! We have had lots of help cutting thankfully, and a good $3,000 worth of donations at a rough guess! These kits are now (today!) headed off in boxes to Malawi on a container with a bunch of other stuff. Once they arrive they will be distributed to women coming in to give birth in hospital and also to school girls who miss a lot of time each month because they have to stay home. We have also sent two new sewing machines, materials, towelling, haby, snap machines so that the women can continue to make the kits themselves. Anything you do seems like a drop in the ocean in the third world but as someone said to me to today... if we all put a drop in the ocean...
I was trying to sneak my way into a box!!! (sneaking isn't really my forte though as you can see!) Huge thanks to http://pwmu.org.au/ for donating $1,000 to this cause so we could send materials for the African women to keep making pads! Thanks also to the many people from http://www.donvale.org/ who donated money, material, towels, undies, and time to this cause! Special mention to Jill who sewed and sewed and sewed 12km of thread!!! I hope when I retire I have the zest and go that she has! We're hoping to find a small village to name after her so if you see one please let me know!
So... now can you excuse me for not updating my blog for a while!?!? I promise to try to do better... after a little sleep! ;-)) Thanks to hookedonyarn81.blogspot.com.au for the blog award... I feel the love and it's heading right back to her... she's one of the few people who can get deliriously excited with me over yarn and colour!!!Mairihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08711799740655250650noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6867878018973025479.post-59608403818932736792011-10-11T23:12:00.000+11:002011-10-11T23:12:17.378+11:00Back to school!Well, school went back today! Always a mixed feeling about that! The house gets quieter... the mess gets less... the routine kicks in... we really miss them when they're gone for the day!

Miss 2 and I pottered around the house this morning feeling a little morose, did some chores, then headed to Sewing Bee to do some more work on our Pads for Africa project. This is a huge job... bring on quilts any day!!! Jill has been a wonder sewing away getting pads finished. To this point I've done a lot of co-ordinating and overlocked what seems like a gazillion insides made of wadding or towelling overlocked together. If you know someone who can sew and would like to help please let me know... these hygiene kits can make a huge difference to young African women. What we plan to do is keep sewing until the container leaves sometime early next year and then send the kits along with a sewing machine, instructions, and materials. That way the project can continue if the girls are keen... no matter how many kits we sew there will never be enough so this feels like a nice compromise.

Tonight I was absolutely wrecked so I had a rare evening in front of the TV and did some more knitting on the red dress! It's almost ready for neckline and sleeves so hopefully it will be off the UFO list pretty soon!

Cannot believe that dad managed to hunt down and find a CAMEL in Singapore of all places!!! He is gorgeous and fits beautifully into my rather extensive camel collection!
More beautiful things from Singapore to share another day!

And last... just for fun... found these rather groovy tissue boxes at the Reject Shop recently! Just to make me smile!! Also made my friend hooked-on-yarn a little happier to sneeze too! It's the fun things that make a life well... more fun!!!
So far I'm pretty happy with progress... especially since I don't intend to buy a single piece of fabric to complete the quilt... oh, hang on a sec... I did purchase a couple of new black and white pieces that were too delicious to pass up the other day!!! Oops! That wasn't supposed to happen... but I didn't buy them FOR the quilt... so does that mean I get let off the hook?!

Anyway, here are my new blocks...

Block 6

Half way there! Thinking I will piece them all together with black sashing and a black inner border then a black and white striped border, then black binding... thought I might piece the first two rows together but I cannot believe I have run out of black homespun!!! How is this possible?!?

An hour later... I scrounged and scrounged and found a bit of black... and a strip from another quilts... so... voila...

I am so loving this quilt so far! Thinking black on all the inside borders and sashing and then black and white stripe on the outside border... what do you think?!Mairihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08711799740655250650noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6867878018973025479.post-57519272400322954562011-10-09T00:14:00.001+11:002011-10-09T20:24:09.787+11:00Making Chewy...Well... it's not something I thought I'd ever find myself doing... making chewy... but life is full of surprises!

Actually, it was easier than I thought... done in an evening... and although it's a bit off in bits I'm generally pretty happy with it! Not that I think it's edible... far from it... but I think the kids will like it... especially my 2 year old! We'll have to wait until the morning for a full report!

So how did I come to be making chewy!? Well... I was blog browsing... as one does... and I saw the recipe... and knew I just had to make it! I rummaged around in my boxes of material and found just the ingredients I needed and a couple of hours later... it was done!

I really must commend draw!pilgrim on her most excellent instructions! They were super simple and clear! Sorry for the wonky bits... they are mine... not hers... ! Also I didn't have any cord in my stash so I used some fur I had been debating about sending to another home... and I stitched my felt face on instead of putting it under... Felt and duct tape stitched on for the ammo belt and he is done! Seriously that face is a bit wonky isn't it... but hey... you gonna tell a wookie that to his face?!!

It's almost like instant gratification... except sometimes 24 hours seems like a long time!!! Anyways, it's holidays, and I've had a sick toddler so a little diversion has been nice! I decided on black and white with a splash of colour look! I have a big drawer full of black and white fabrics and a bunch of coloured scraps crying out to be used up! Okay, so I admit it's a bit of a favourite of mine! Strangely because I find black and white on their own pretty dull but they certainly do make the colours stand out and I'm always up for that!!
